Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• SLO#1 PRODUCE AND COMPREHEND BASIC COURTESIES AND SIMPLE CONVERSATIONS IN VIETNAMESE.
• Understand short spoken dialogues and answer simple questions, such as greetings, identifying people, using numbers, telling time, days of the week, and weather descriptions.
• Respond orally using core vocabulary phrases and expressions.
• Incorporate basic learned materials, such as phrases and expressions, in a daily life situations.
• SLO#2 DEMONSTRATE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE IN WRITING USING LEARNED GRAMMATICAL FORMS.
• Write and describe a list from materials read or heard.
• Write simple sentences about biographical information, telling time and calendar, and describing weather and activities.
• SLO#3 ANALYZE AND INTERPRET WRITTEN MATERIAL.
• Comprehend a reading selection based on familiar topics, such as greetings, biographical information, telling time and calendar, and describing weather and activities.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• SLO#1: DEMONSTRATE INCREASED CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND MORE SUSTAINED CONTROL OF LEARNED HIGH FREQUENCY EXPRESSIONS AND PHRASES IN CONVERSATIONS.
• Create short dialogs which include routine questions and answers about family relationships, color and clothing, shopping habits, food preparation, physical description and health. Produce speech intelligible to a sympathetic listener using broader vocabulary than in Vietnamese 401.
• Respond orally, give physical descriptions of people, places and things, compare and contrast using core vocabulary phrases and expressions.
• Produce recognizable speech and utilize accurate and appropriate terms to initiate and maintain conversations in various settings like interacting with the family, shopping for food and clothing, and describing physical characteristics and common illnesses.
• SLO#2: DEMONSTRATE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE IN WRITING USING LEARNED VOCABULARY AND GRAMMATICAL FORMS.
• Create short compositions that include listing, writing simple messages and supplying information using simple sentences. Writing will be intelligible to a sympathetic reader used to communicate with non-native speakers and demonstrate emerging creativity.
• Write simple and complex sentences to describe or compare and contrast family members, color and clothing, food preparation and eating habits, and physical characteristics and health.
• Describe or summarize information based on written or oral materials using basic but broader vocabulary than that used at the Vietnamese 401 level and with increasing accuracy.
• SLO#3: DEMONSTRATE ABILITY TO COMPREHEND, INTERPRET, AND ANALYZE WRITTEN MATERIALS.
• Comprehend and analyze a reading selection, pose relevant questions, and reply to content questions based on learned topics, such as family relationship, clothing, food, physical characteristics and health.
• SLO#4: DISTINGUISH CULTURAL ELEMENTS OF THE VIETNAMESE-SPEAKING WORLD.
• Recognize the basic cultural values in a variety of situations, such as the use of appropriate pronouns to address family members and appropriate etiquettes during a family meal.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• SLO#1: DEMONSTRATE THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING, NATIVE-LIKE FLUENCY, AND CLEAR CONTROL OF THE VIETNAMESE SPEECH.
• Produce short dialogs which include questions and answers on topics related to education, occupation, entertainment, places in a city, and traveling.
• Make use of learned materials and grammatical concepts at the intermediate level to engage in conversations, ask questions and respond using appropriate vocabulary phrases and expressions.
• Initiate and maintain conversations in various familiar situations to communicate needs using accurate and appropriate cultural terms.
• SLO#2: DEMONSTRATE ABILITY TO ARTICULATE AND EXPRESS IDEAS AND OPINIONS IN WRITING USING LEARNED VOCABULARY AND GRAMMATICAL FORMS.
• Create compositions to list, explain, and describe various settings such as activities at school, at work, for entertainment, in a city, and travel preparations.
• Describe or summarize information with increased fluency using simple, compound, and complex sentences based on written or oral materials using broader vocabulary than that used at the Vietnamese 402 level.
• SLO#3: DEMONSTRATE ABILITY TO COMPREHEND, ANALYZE, AND INTERPRET WRITTEN MATERIALS.
• Respond to reading selections on topics such as education, occupation, entertainment, finding places in a city, and traveling to Viet Nam.
• Produce compositions that express ideas and opinions based on materials learned in and out of class.
• SLO#4: ANALYZE AND RECOGNIZE CULTURAL ELEMENTS OF THE VIETNAMESE-SPEAKING WORLD.
• Recognize the cultural values in a variety of situations, such as the use of appropriate terms to address people in the workplace.
• Identify and present characteristics of the Vietnamese culture by reviewing reference materials, outlining and elaborating the main points, and engaging in discussion.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• SLO1: COMPREHEND AND USE BASIC COURTESIES AND SIMPLE CONVERSATIONS ON STUDENT LIFE IN VIETNAMESE.
• Understand short spoken dialogue and answer simple questions, such as greetings, telling time and days, identifying people in the family, describing activities in the classroom, at home, in the workplace, in the city, and for entertainment and travel. Communicate minimally with learned materials. The student can respond orally using core vocabulary phrases and expressions learned at the 411 level in conversation and writing.
• SLO2: ANALYZE AND INTERPRET WRITTEN MATERIAL.
• Comprehend a reading selection based on familiar topics, such as family, weather,food, home and classroom activities.
• Write short paragraphs to identify people in the family and describe activities in the classroom, at home, in the workplace, in the city, and for entertainment and travel.
• SLO3: DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE OF GEOGRAPHY AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE CULTURE OF THE REGIONS WHERE VIETNAMESE IS SPOKEN, INCLUDING ART, ARCHITECTURE, MUSIC, DANCE, LITERARY FIGURES, RECORDING ARTISTS, AND OTHER ACTIVITIES WHICH ARE PART OF THE CULTURE.
• Learn about the fundamental cultural values of Vietnamese in Vietnam and how they are different from those of Vietnamese Americans living overseas.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• SLO #1: Actively engage in intellectual inquiry beyond that required in order to pass a course of study (College Wide Learning Outcome – Area 4).
• Discuss and outline a proposal of study (that can be accomplished within one semester term) with a supervising instructor qualified within the discipline.
• Design an independent study (to be completed individually or by collaboration of a small group) to foster special knowledge, skills, and experience that are not available in any one regularly scheduled course.
• Use information resources to gather discipline-specific information.
• SLO #2: Utilize modes of analysis and critical thinking to apply theoretical perspectives and/or concepts in the major discipline of study to significant problems and/or educational activities (College Wide Learning Outcome – Area 3).
• Analyze and apply the knowledge, skills and experience that are involved in the independent study to theoretical perspectives and/or concepts in the major discipline of study.
• Explain the importance of the major discipline of study in the broader picture of society.
• SLO #3: Communicate a complex understanding of content matter of the major discipline of study (College Wide Outcome – Area 3).
• Demonstrate competence in the skills essential to mastery of the major discipline of study that are necessary to accomplish the independent study.
• SLO #4: Identify personal goals and pursue these goals effectively (College Wide Outcome – Area 4).
• Utilize skills from the “academic tool kit” including time management, study skills, etc., to accomplish the independent study within one semester term.
