SURG 100 Introduction to Surgical Technology

This course provides an introduction to the field of Surgical Technology. Students will learn the typical duties of a surgical technologist, the roles and functions of the surgical team, the legal regulations and ethical implications of surgical technology, and the various facilities where surgical technologists are employed. Students will also be introduced to the desired qualities and characteristics of a successful surgical technologist. Additionally, the CRC Surgical Technology Program specifics will be discussed, including the application process and entrance requirements.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- SLO #1 - IDENTIFY THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST.
- Objective 1 - Discuss the function of the Surgical Technologist as part of the surgical team.
- Objective 2 - Describe the various facilities that employ Surgical Technologists.
- Objective 3 - Explain the desired qualities of a professional Surgical Technologist.

SURG 105 Basic Sciences for Surgical Technologists

This course will review the basic sciences of human anatomy and physiology related to surgical procedures, common disease states that require surgical intervention, and the concepts of microbiology involved in surgical procedures. The course will also cover typical medications used during and after surgery, as well as basic physics as it applies to operating room procedures and practices. This course is designed for students who have been officially accepted to the CRC Surgical Technology program through the formal application process.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- SLO #1 - APPLY BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE PRINCIPLES WITHIN THE SURGICAL SETTING.
- Objective 1 - Identify anatomical structures prior to and during surgical procedures.
- Objective 2 - Apply microbiological principles of infection control and aseptic practices prior to, during, and after surgical procedures.
- Objective 3 - Discuss the pathologic conditions and disease states that may require surgical intervention.
- SLO #2 - APPLY PHARMACOLOGICAL SCIENCE PRINCIPLES WITHIN THE SURGICAL SETTING.
- Objective 1 - Identify the common medications used in the surgical setting.
- Objective 2 - Compare and contrast the side-effects, adverse reactions, and contraindications of medications used during surgery.
- Objective 3 - Relate the generic and trade name of common medications used during and after surgery.
SURG 110 Surgical Patient Care Concepts

This course provides the student with a theoretical and practical understanding of the technology and practices used in caring for a patient undergoing a surgical procedure. Additional material covers the structure and function of various surgical facilities. This course is designed for students who have been officially accepted to the CRC Surgical Technology program through the formal application process.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- SLO #1 - DESCRIBE THE SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST ROLE IN THE PREOPERATIVE PHASE OF A SURGICAL PATIENT
- Objective 1 - Discuss the biopsychosocial needs of surgical patient, including the patient's rights and required consents.
- Objective 2 - Identify the appropriate room preparation, including but not limited to equipment and supplies, anesthesia needs, and hazard risk management.
- Objective 3 - Utilize proper body mechanics during patient transport, transfer, and positioning.
- Objective 4 - Perform correct aseptic practices and sterile techniques including surgical attire, surgical scrub, and patient skin preparation.
- SLO #2 - DESCRIBE THE SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST ROLE IN THE INTRAOPERATIVE PHASE OF A SURGICAL PATIENT.
- Objective 1 - Describe the management of the surgical patient including monitoring vital signs, hemodynamics, and emergency procedures.
- Objective 2 - Discuss the basics of case management of a patient undergoing surgery including wound healing, wound closures and dressings, drains and catheters, and specimen care.
- SLO #3 - DESCRIBE THE SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST ROLE IN THE POSTOPERATIVE PHASE OF A SURGICAL PATIENT.
- Objective 1 - Identify appropriate post-anesthesia care of the surgical patient.
- Objective 2 - Discuss the risks involved in surgical care, including the elements of death and dying.
- Objective 3 - Discuss the role of the Assistant Circulator in the surgical suite.
SURG 112 Surgical Skills Lab

This laboratory course is the hands-on portion of the program where students will learn the clinical skills required to demonstrate competency in the operating room as a surgical technologist. This course is designed for students who have been officially accepted to the CRC Surgical Technology program through the formal application process.

- SLO #1 - DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE IN SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION AND EQUIPMENT HANDLING
- Objective 1 - Demonstrate knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment, and their uses across various surgical specialties.
- Objective 2 - Exhibit competence in identifying, handling, and organizing surgical instruments and equipment required for various surgical procedures.
- Objective 3 - Perform proper sterilization techniques and instrument care, adhering to established protocols to maintain equipment functionality and prevent cross-contamination.
- SLOE #2 - DEMONSTRATE PROPER INFECTION CONTROL AND ASEPTIC TECHNIQUES.
- Objective 1 - Perform correct process of sterile draping, gowning, and gloving procedures.
- Objective 2 - Demonstrate proper environmental sanitization and disinfection, hand hygiene, and the use of protective equipment to minimize the risk of infection.
- SLO #3 - IMPLEMENT EFFECTIVE SURGICAL PROTOCOLS AND PROCEDURES.

SURG 115 Surgical Specialties

This course covers the most common procedures and equipment utilized by the surgical technologist during specialty surgery. These specialties include neurosurgery, vascular surgery, orthopedic surgery and others. This course will also help prepare the student for the national certification exam. This course is designed for students who have been officially accepted to the CRC Surgical Technology program through the formal application process.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- SLO #1: DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE IN SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION AND EQUIPMENT HANDLING FOR SPECIALTY SURGERIES.
- Objective 1: Exhibit competence in identifying, handling, and organizing surgical instruments and equipment utilized in various surgical specialties.
- Objective 2: Demonstrate knowledge of sterilization techniques and proper instrument care for specialized instruments and equipment.
- SLO #2: DEMONSTRATE EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF SURGICAL PROTOCOLS AND PROCEDURES.
- Objective 1: Exhibit competence in assisting surgeons during specialty surgical procedures.

SURG 120 Surgical Technology Practicum I

This course provides the student with hands-on experience in the surgical suite caring for patients under the supervision of a surgical technologist or a registered nurse. They will also gain experience in patient and staff interaction and communication. This course is designed for students who have been officially accepted to the CRC Surgical Technology program through the formal application process.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- SLO #1: DEMONSTRATE COMPETENCE IN ASSISTING SURGEONS DURING PROCEDURES.
- Objective 1: Apply established surgical protocols and procedures as dictated by the clinical site.
- Objective 2: Anticipate procedural steps and provide appropriate instrumentation and equipment, as needed.
- Objective 3: Perform appropriate patient preparation, such as positioning, skin preparation, and anesthesia.
- SLO #2: APPLY CORRECT ASEPTIC TECHNIQUES AND INFECTION CONTROL PROCEDURES.
- Objective 1: Demonstrate correct draping, gowning, and gloving procedures in the surgical setting.
- Objective 2: Demonstrate competence in environmental sanitation, maintaining the sterile field, and proper use of personal protective equipment.

This course provides the student with additional hands-on experience in the operating room under the supervision of a surgical technologist or other licensed surgical practitioner. They will gain experience in patient care and the role of the surgical technologist within the surgical field. This course will also help prepare the student for the national certification examination. This course is designed for students who have been officially accepted to the CRC Surgical Technology program through the formal application process.
