MESA
Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) helps prepare underrepresented students in obtaining a calculus-based four-year degree in areas such as engineering, the sciences, computer science, and mathematics. MESA has particular focus on students from those groups who historically have had the lowest levels of attainment to four-year and graduate level programs. MESA is an equity program that was born out of the civil rights movement during the 1960s. For over 50 years MESA has served students who are historically excluded in education, and specifically in the STEM fields. MESA’s community college level program produces a diverse population of transfer-ready students to advance their STEM educational journeys in 4-year university programs.
Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs). Workshops consisting of a small community of students working collaboratively to master course material with the guidance of a peer facilitator. AEWs are designed to enhance learning by focusing on problem solving the difficult elements of the course collectively and fostering an environment where students perform, achieve, and excel.
Orientation. A series of sessions/workshops that offers networking, cultivates study skills, promotes personal and professional development, provides an overview of technical careers, corporations and universities, and promotes timely transfer.
Assistance in the transfer process. MESA offers workshops on applications and counseling and field trips to universities.
Career advising. Students are exposed to different math, engineering and science career options through industry mentors, field trips, job shadowing, career fairs and internship opportunities.
Links with student and professional organizations. These resources provide mentors, guest speakers and tours of companies.
STEM Center. This dedicated multipurpose space is used for study, workshops and information sharing. STEM courses tutoring and dedicated computers are also available in the Center.
Professional development workshops. Students participate in mock job fairs, learn resume preparation and interview skills and how to find part-time, full-time and summer employment.
Tutoring. Tutors assist students with their course material throughout the fall and spring semesters. MESA offers tutoring in biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, physics, and statistics.
Academic Counseling. Designated MESA counselors are available in the STEM Center to assist with education and transfer planning as well as other advising and support students may need to ensure they succeed.
