Common Course Numbering

What Are Common Course Numbers?

Starting in Fall 2025, California community colleges began adopting a Common Course Numbering (CCN) system (per AB 1111). This system assigns common course numbers for comparable courses across all community colleges in the state. The goal of CCN is to facilitate a smoother transfer of credits between colleges and four-year institutions. CCN uses the following structure:

Subject Code/Course Prefix

Four-letter abbreviation of the subject area (for example, ENGL for English).

Course Type Identifier

CCN courses begin with "C" but local courses do not (for example, C1000 vs. 300).

Course Number

Standardized 4-digit number (for example, C1000 vs. 300).

Course Specialty Identifier

Some courses have additional characters appended to their course number, such as:

E = Embedded support
H = Honors course
L = Lab-only course
S = Support Course

As an example, ENGWR 300 becomes ENGL C1000 after the CCN transition.

How Common Course Numbering Helps Students

The new system helps you plan your classes better, especially if you want to transfer to a University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU). It makes transferring credits simpler and clearer for everyone.

What This Means for Students

Spring and Summer 2026: Some courses transitioned to CCN beginning in Fall 2025. For example, ENGWR 300 was included in the first transition phase, so you will look for ENGL C1000 when you register for classes.
Fall 2026: A new batch of courses will transition to CCN beginning in Fall 2026 and are listed in the following table. For example, HIST 310 is included in the second transition phase, so you will look for HIST C1001 when you register for classes.
Phased Transition: The transition will happen in phases, so you'll continue to see both types of courses in the class schedule.

FAQ

What will appear on my transcript?

For classes taken during or before Summer 2025, you will see the old course numbers. For classes taken in or after Fall 2025, you will see the new Common Course Numbers. All new course numbers will start with the letter "C."

I took STAT 300 and earned a B, but my certificate/degree requires STAT C1000. Do I need to take STAT C1000?

No, you do not need to enroll in STAT C1000. STAT 300 is equivalent to STAT C1000, so STAT 300 will automatically fulfill your certificate or degree requirements in place of STAT C1000.

I successfully completed ENGWR 300 and plan to enroll in ENGL C1001. The prerequisite for ENGL C1001 is CCN college-level composition (ENGL C1000, ENGL C1000H, ENGL C1000E/C-ID ENGL 100) or equivalent. Do I need to take ENGL C1000 or submit a petition for prerequisite clearance to enroll in ENGL C1001?

No, you do not need to take ENGL C1000. ENGWR 300 is equivalent to a CCN college-level composition course. You can directly enroll in ENGL C1001 without needing to take ENGL C1000 or submit a petition for prerequisite clearance.

I took POLS 301 and did not pass. If I take POLS C1000 and pass, am I eligible for grade alleviation?

Yes, you can receive grade alleviation for POLS 301 by successfully completing POLS C1000, as they are considered equivalent courses (the same).

I successfully completed ENGWR 480 and plan to enroll in an Honors course for the next level. Can I still take Honors courses with CCN?

Yes, you can still enroll in Honors courses with CCN. These courses will now include an H at the end of the number, ENGL C1001H. You will also see "Honors" in the titles of the courses.

I plan to take PSYC C1000 at another community college, but intend to graduate from a Los Rios College, will it count for the same Cal-GETC area in Los Rios?

Efforts are underway to align course articulation across California Community Colleges, as well as with the University of California and California State University systems, for Cal-GETC, major preparation, and course-to-course equivalencies. However, students are encouraged to consult ASSIST or speak with a counselor to confirm how the course will apply to their specific academic plan.
