Overview
CRC Music Degree programs provide students with the foundational core curriculum in music, designed to prepare and build musicianship through courses in music theory, history, and performance. Music Majors choose an emphasis in either instrumental or vocal performance while pursuing the Associate of Arts and the Associate of Arts for Transfer degrees.
Certificates in Music serve as supplemental areas of specialization and first steps toward a career in music. The CRC Music Department offers one-year certificate programs in Entrepreneurial Arts and Music to support the professional interests of students on campus regardless of their major.

Associate Degrees for Transfer
A.A.-T. in Music
The Associate in Arts in Music for Transfer (AA-T) program provides students with a major that fulfills the general requirements for transfer to a California State University. Students with this degree will receive priority admission with junior status to the California State University system. Students should work closely with their Cosumnes River College counselor to ensure that they are taking the appropriate coursework to prepare for majoring in Music at the institution they wish to transfer to because major and general education requirements may vary for each CSU and the degree may only transfer to specific institutions.
Completion of this degree provides a foundation in music. Program offerings include coursework in music theory and aural skills, applied composition, instrumental and vocal instruction, and ensemble performance.
Students must complete the following Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) requirements:
(1) Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following:
(A) The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC).
(B) A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
(2) Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
ADTs also require that students must earn a “C” or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis. A “P” (Pass) grade is also an acceptable grade for courses in the major if the course is taken on a Pass/No Pass basis.

- Students interested in the program should contact the Applied Music coordinator for more information about a music literacy assessment. The goal of the assessment is to place students into a music theory and literature course appropriate to the student's skill level.

- PSLO #3: CONTEXTUAL UNDERSTANDING: Establish an historical, geographical and chronological context of music and differentiate different eras and styles of music.
- PSLO #4: CRITICAL LEARNING SKILLS: Acquire skills to analyze and compare musical compositions, scores and performances; Compose music for the purpose of understanding the elements of music within the context of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and early Twentieth Century.
Career Information
Individuals with four-year degrees in music may teach in the K-12 educational field as well as perform in professional music ensembles, direct religious and community music groups, instruct in private music studios, compose for media and publishing, music therapy, and administrative staff for music organizations. Advanced degrees in music may lead to careers as educators at the college or university level, performers, music directors, and music editors and journalists. NOTE TO TRANSFER STUDENTS: The Associate Degree for Transfer program is designed for students who plan to transfer to a campus of the California State University (CSU). For students wishing to transfer to other universities (UC System, private, or out-of-state), the Associate Degree for Transfer may not provide adequate preparation for upper-division transfer admissions; it is critical that you meet with a CRC counselor to select and plan the courses for the major, as programs vary widely in terms of the required preparation.

Note to Transfer Students:
If you are interested in transferring to a four-year college or university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in this major, it is critical that you meet with a CRC counselor to select and plan the courses for your major. Schools vary widely in terms of the required preparation. The courses that CRC requires for an Associate’s degree in this major may be different from the requirements needed for the Bachelor’s degree.

Music History Certificate
Completion of this certificate provides an introductory foundation to the history of music in its historical and cultural contexts. The certificate includes both western and global music history, including traditional and popular styles. Students pursuing an AA or AA-T in Music may complete this certificate as part of their coursework; please consult a counselor for more information.

A brief study of the development of music from the middle ages to music of today, emphasizing the relation of music to the social, cultural, economic and political factors which produced it. Learn to listen to and understand the music of many historic periods and cultures through the features they share: sound sources, time frame, rhythm and meter, pitch, and structure. Concert attendance is required. Designed for the student with no previous musical study and for those who are particularly interested in the humanities or the arts.

This course examines social, political, cultural and economic issues as they relate to the history of rock and roll music. Musical examples will develop listening skills and the ability to critique the music orally and in written form. This course is designed for students with no previous musical study.

This course is a detailed study of the development of music from antiquity to 1750, emphasizing the relation of music to the social, cultural, economic and political factors which produced it. This course is required for music majors pursuing and designed for those particularly interested in the humanities or the arts. No previous musical experience (e.g., reading western music notation) is required for this course.
