When more applications are received than there are program slots, a “Lottery” protocol is implemented. Applicants will be assigned a lottery “Pool” category based on certain qualifications, standards, or other outlined metrics. All applicants will receive a “chit” or other labeled “voucher” using numbers, letters, or a combination of both. The applicants' applicable “chit” or “voucher” quantity will be placed in a designated container to be drawn by one or more designated school officials at the designated time and place listed by the ST Director (the ST Program Director will only record and notify selected candidates during this process).

The “Lottery” process is a closed process with only the designated school officials and ST Program Staff present for authentication purposes. All candidates will be notified of their admittance or deferral at the appropriate and publicly announced times (see the Surgical Technology Website or contact the Surgical Technology staff for more details).

“Chits” or “Vouchers” are parsed out by the “Pool” category assigned to the applicant, with no more than 4 “Chits” or “Vouchers” assigned to any applicant at any time. There will be 4 “Pool” types with “6 Tiers” assigned to each “Pool.” Each “Tier” within a pool represents a qualification or attribute a candidate can use to obtain the highest possible opportunity to access more “Chits” or “Vouchers.” You must meet the minimum requirement of the “Pool” to receive a “Chit” or “Voucher” to move to the next “Pool.”

All Experience, Certifications, Education, and other applicable designations must be verifiable, whether active, inactive, awarded, or commissioned prior to the lottery selection process date.

The following table reflects the “Pool” categories and “Tier” types.

Each attribute/qualification is placed in the appropriate box.

Classification Outline

The following Classification Outline is an example of how each candidate is categorized and is adjusted accordingly, on a case-by-case basis, to determine “Chit” or “Voucher” quantity only.

Please note that the “Delta” pool is the “General Applicant” pool with the lowest “Chit” or “Voucher” offered (e.g., 1), while the “Alpha” pool is the highest (e.g., 4). Once applicants have been selected, they will exchange their “Chit” or “Voucher” assignment for a slot within the Surgical Technology program. Applicants may choose to exchange their “Chit” or “Voucher,” or not; if they do not, they forfeit their slot within the program.

“Reserve Admittance” students will replace the randomly selected applicants if those applicants choose not to participate in the exchange for their program slot. “Reserve Admittance” students will be selected through the same lottery process and placed on a waitlist in order of selection to replace any applicant who declines their program slot. The “Reserve Admittance” students will be given conditional admittance to the Surgical Technology program until the first census date or the final student add-on date approaches (whichever is sooner). If any applicant does not drop from the program, and all applicants accept their slots, the conditional admittance for those waitlisted “Reserve Admittance” students will be revoked until the next application period. A minimum of 3 “Reserve Admittance” applicants will be selected, with no more than 15 on the waitlist in a lottery-selected order.

All official transcripts must be submitted by July 1 for applicants to retain their program slot, or they will be dropped and replaced with a “Reserve Admittance” applicant. If a “Reserve Admittance” student takes a program slot, they will have until July 10 to submit their final transcripts, or they will be replaced by the next applicant on the list.

Exceptions for final transcripts can be made if a course is still in progress or on a case-by-case basis.
