The Student Emergency Fund provides grants of up to $500 to Los Rios students who are involved in sudden and unexpected emergencies that threaten their ability to continue their education. These grants have no repayment obligation.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible, students must meet all of the following:
- Have a temporary financial hardship resulting from a sudden emergency and be able to provide sufficient documentation of financial hardship (see examples of emergencies)
- Be currently enrolled in at least six (6) units at a Los Rios college
- Have previously completed at least (6) units at a Los Rios college (can be combined across multiple Los Rios colleges)
- Qualify as low-income by meeting the requirements to receive a California College Promise Grant (CCPG)
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA) – if eligible to do so – or be a student without a social security number (SSN) who is unable to receive financial aid
- Have at least $1,000 of Unmet Need
- Be a resident of California
- Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, be in good academic standing, and be making satisfactory academic progress at Los Rios
- Have no more than 85 units without an explanation for the excess units
- Have identified and made progress toward an academic goal
- Show evidence that other possible resources (such as insurance, financial aid, or funding from other service organizations) must have been considered and are unavailable or insufficient (must show evidence or address in questions, if applicable)
- Explain how the student will be able to move successfully forward in school following a grant
How to Apply
The application opens on the first day of instruction for the semester and closes on the last day of instruction before finals.

Maximum Award
A maximum of one $500 Student Emergency Fund award will be given to any one student during all combined enrollments at the Los Rios colleges. The actual grant amount depends on documented expenses. For instance, if a student provides documentation for a $320 car repair bill, an award of $320 will be made.

Eligible students will receive these grants through BankMobile, so please make sure that your BankMobile account is set up.

Examples
Emergency Situations
- Sudden illness or accident resulting in loss of work
- Sudden death or illness in the immediate family
- Domestic violence situations
- Fire, natural disaster, or theft
- Homelessness
- Inability to buy food for self and/or family even after food bank assistance
- Unexpected medical needs not covered by insurance or other agency
- Unexpected move
- Sudden loss of transportation
Non-Emergency Situations
- Monthly expenses that are more than the monthly budget/income
- Theft or damage of nonessential items
- Delay in receiving financial aid or student who did not apply for financial aid when eligible
- Expenses that are burdensome, but do not threaten student’s ability to stay in school or pay for necessities
- Debts incurred or penalties and interest on past-due bills
- Fines or restitution owed from criminal or civil court cases; back child support
- Expenses incurred from being illegally underinsured (that is, involved in an auto accident while uninsured)
