Statement

Beneath the Surface

In this work, I suggest that underneath our "polished" exteriors we hold a plethora of memories and experiences which overlap, crash into and blend in with one-another creating the foundation of our identity. These memories and experiences are all represented by the images, people, places and things that reveal themselves when an outer shell is opened and exposed. In these particular pieces this exposure is a progression. What lies beneath the surface is slowly exposed, starting as a small opening, gradually tearing open and eventually exploding.

Crayons

Embedded in these crayons are firearms. Our children today are required to practice active-shooter preparedness drills in school. They are taught how to respond if someone were to come to their school attempting to shoot them. The impact of this frightening reality plays a significant role in the development of our children’s identity.
