The academic excellence of Cosumnes River student-athletes continued in the Spring 2024 semester as 139 student-athletes from nine sports compiled a 3.189 grade point average in data released by Cosumnes River Athletics. The department streak of grading periods with a GPA above 3.0 is impressive and now spans nine consecutive semesters spanning the last five academic years. 89 student-athletes were recognized as CRC Scholar-Athletes for attaining a 3.0 GPA, enrolled in 12 or more units, and competed during the 2023-2024 academic year.
The elite level of academic achievement for Cosumnes River Athletics has truly been across-the-board in recent years. Five varsity sports had a team GPA over 3.0. The highest team GPA for the Spring 2024 grading period came from women's beach volleyball with a 3.595 mark, while the top five teams also included baseball (3.466), softball (3.337), women's volleyball (3.159), and women's soccer (3.124).
"I am beyond proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes," said Collin Pregliasco, Dean of Kinesiology, Health, and Athletics & Athletic Director. "Nine straight semesters of 3.0 GPA or better is an accomplishment that few community colleges can state…and we're not done yet. We'll continue to find ways to improve and ensure our student-athletes have all the resources and support they need to be successful and hopefully celebrating our 10th straight semester of 3.0 GPA or better in the fall."
On an individual level, 68 percent of student-athletes (94) had a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher and 39 percent (54) had a GPA above a 3.5 for the semester. 18 student-athletes representing seven sports who had a perfect 4.0 GPA in the Spring. Five different sports had multiple student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA.
The combination of academic achievement and athletic success is one of the benchmarks that puts Cosumnes River in the upper echelon of 3C2A athletics programs. There was no better example of that during the past semester as the Hawks women's soccer team won the Big 8 regular season and Conference Tournament titles and made it to the 3C2A State Championships for the 4th time while posting a 3.124 team GPA. Not to be outdone, softball finished the season ranked #8 in the state and made it to the 3C2A State Championships for the 4th time while posting a 3.337 team GPA. Each program had four student-athletes who posted a 4.0 GPA for the semester. In addition, Cosumnes River College's first year women's beach volleyball team combined having the highest semester GPA with a 3rd place Big 8 Conference finish and three pairs qualified for 3C2A Pairs Championships.
While continuing to set and surpass its own lofty benchmarks for academic achievement, Cosumnes River College has continued to excel in athletic competition on a state level. This year seven of the eight team sports not only qualified for playoffs, but five teams advanced at least to the 2nd Round. Both women's soccer and softball advanced to the 3C2A State Championships. Women's soccer won the Big 8 Conference regular season and conference tournament championships. This represents women's soccer first Big 8 Championship and Cosumnes River's 10th Big 8 Championship since moving over from the Bay Valley Conference in 2005. Cosumnes River also was awarded one Big 8 Coaching Staff of the Year, six Big 8 Conference MVPs and Players of the Year, 21 Big 8 Conference 1st Team, eight Big 8 Conference 2nd Team, five Big 8 Conference Honorable Mentions, two All-Nor Cal, three All-State, two All Far-West, and four All-Americans.
