Listening/speaking, reading/writing, and grammar are essential language skills for English language learners to be successful at school, at work, and in life. Students are expected to use listening, speaking, grammar, reading, and writing to complete in-class activities, assignments, and exams in every ESL class. Therefore, in order to develop a well-rounded language foundation, taking all the skills courses at one level before moving to the next level is ideal.

Students taking college-level courses are expected to have English verbal communication, reading, and writing skills to be successful in those classes. For this reason, students are strongly encouraged to complete the ESL 110 level before they enroll in non-ESL courses.
