Could I Have Learning Disabilities?

About Learning Disability Services

The Cosumnes River College Learning Disabilities (LD) Program provides support services to students with learning disabilities as well as assessment services to CRC students who do not have documentation but feel they may have a learning disability that impacts them in an educational setting. The student must be enrolled and currently attending CRC to receive the services.

If you already have documentation of a learning disability, you do not need to be re-evaluated to receive academic accommodations and support services at DSPS. Simply Apply to DSPS.

In order to receive DSPS services, a student must provide specific documentation of learning disabilities or be evaluated to determine eligibility for the program. Evaluations are available to CRC students who are enrolled in classes and are determined to be appropriate candidates for the testing. The assessment process provides an opportunity for students to discover their cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses, in addition to determining eligibility for services. The Learning Disabilities Specialist will interpret the test results and make individual recommendations on how to improve learning and study strategies.

Definition

Learning disabilities are learning differences which may interfere with the ability to understand, remember, and/or use information. The effects are quite individual, but it is generally accepted that these difficulties create a gap between a person's true capacity and his or her day-to-day performance and productivity.

These learning differences may include difficulties with:

  • Attention or concentration
  • Memory
  • Visual and/or auditory processing
  • Spatial orientation
  • Language
  • Reasoning
  • Sequencing

These problems with learning are not a result of factors such as educational disadvantage, emotional/psychological disturbance, physical disabilities or limited ability. Students with learning disabilities experience frustrations with learning that make school difficult even though they have the aptitude to succeed.

Common Characteristics of College Students with Learning Disabilities

Following is only a partial list of difficulties that college students with a learning disability often experience. These problems persist even though the student has had adequate academic instruction or remediation.
