Umoja Diop Scholars
The Umoja ("oo-Mo-jah") Diop Scholars program is a community of learners designed to support and increase academic success. This program addresses students’ needs through academic support services and curriculum focused on African American and multicultural literature, history, and experiences. Umoja Diop Scholars is open to all students and is designed to increase the retention and success rate, as well as the graduation and transfer rates of African ancestry students. The curriculum focuses on improving reading, writing, self-discipline, and critical thinking skills.
How to Apply
Students must apply to Umoja Diop Scholars through the online application.
Following your application we will contact you to schedule an appointment with a counselor. A counselor will assist you to create and/or update your student educational plan and provide permission numbers for our courses.
The Umoja Diop Scholars program offers:
- Counseling services
- Courses dedicated and centered around Black students and our practices
- Working closely with program faculty
- Strengthening written, oral, and critical thinking skills
- Participating in academic enrichment and co-curricular activities
- Becoming active and responsible learners
- Community building
- College tours to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), California State University (CSU), and University of California (UC)
- Academic and cultural field trips
- Academic excellence celebrations
- Village space
- Learning about African, African American, and multicultural heritage
- A strong support system and personal attention
- Learning and studying with other highly motivated college students
To be eligible for Umoja Diop, students must:
- Be eligible for enrollment or enrolled at Cosumnes River College
- Be eligible for enrollment in English Writing 300
- Submit an Academic Progress Report each semester
- Be highly encouraged to enroll in 12 units or more of academic courses each semester during the program, including linked courses
- Be interested in learning about the African diaspora
To be successful in the Umoja Diop program, students must also:
- Have a high level of motivation and dedication
- Participate in activities
- Meet with a counselor each semester
- Be eager to engage in curriculum and educational spaces dedicated to the African diaspora(s) and people of African descent experiences
- Want to build and be a part of a growing and learning community
Umoja Diop Scholars is open to all eligible students.
The Umoja Diop Scholars program is a consortium member of the Umoja Community of California Community Colleges.
