Umoja Diop Scholars

The Umoja Diop Scholars program offers:

• Counseling services
• Courses dedicated and centered around Black students and our practices
  • Working closely with program faculty
  • Strengthening written, oral, and critical thinking skills
  • Participating in academic enrichment and co-curricular activities
  • Becoming active and responsible learners
• Community building
  • College tours to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), California State University (CSU), and University of California (UC)
  • Academic and cultural field trips
  • Academic excellence celebrations
  • Village space
  • Learning about African, African American, and multicultural heritage
  • A strong support system and personal attention
  • Learning and studying with other highly motivated college students

To be eligible for Umoja Diop, students must:

• Be eligible for enrollment or enrolled at Cosumnes River College
• Be eligible for enrollment in English Writing 300
• Submit an Academic Progress Report each semester
• Be highly encouraged to enroll in 12 units or more of academic courses each semester during the program, including linked courses
• Be interested in learning about the African diaspora

To be successful in the Umoja Diop program, students must also:

• Have a high level of motivation and dedication
• Participate in activities
• Meet with a counselor each semester
• Be eager to engage in curriculum and educational spaces dedicated to the African diaspora(s) and people of African descent experiences
• Want to build and be a part of a growing and learning community
