Jennifer King: Home on Native Land
Mixed media sculpture by artist Jennifer King.
Join us for the opening reception of an exhibition of work by Jennifer King, an artist from Montreal Lake Cree Nation, a First Nations reservation in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Her works tell the story of loss and restoration, unbounded sorrow and defiant hope.
"My artwork narrates the personal, social, spiritual, and ecological results of the numerous historic displacements of First Nations people like me. By utilizing house-building materials, dyes made of food scraps, recycled papers, and other symbolic materials, I highlight the scope, breadth, and depth of the fallout from these shameful and disastrous eras. However, I also examine my own participation in the corrupt systems that continue to oppress my people. Included are large landscapes of Vancouver Island that contain unique vantage points of the Island and are filled with saturated chromas to illustrate the passion I hold for ecological conservation."
Jennifer’s works aim to heal the spaces that divide humankind from each other, themselves, the earth and their Creator.
