Welcome to the Reading and Writing Center! The RWC offers support from peer tutors, staff, and professors from the English Department. Students can receive help with understanding required reading, and writing from nearly any discipline, from History to Fitness. The RWC specializes in helping with writing arguments, telling personal stories, and explaining complex ideas and research. Students do not need to make an appointment at this time.
Who Can Use the RWC?
The Reading and Writing Center is open to all students enrolled at CRC, whether accessing the RWC online or in-person. Enrolled students can use tutoring services without enrolling in any specific classes. It is also not required to enroll in a ENGLB lab course. If students wish to commit to a specific amount of hours in the writing lab, they can earn college credit..
Attendance Requirement if You Are Enrolled in an ENGLB Course
Students who enroll in an ENGLB Course (ENGLB 70, 72, 73, etc) are committing to participate for a specific amount of hours across the semester. An ENGLB class is graded on a Credit/No Credit basis, and no lectures are given. Participation credit can only be earned by being present in LRC 203 or logged into the RWC Penji online.
Students choose how many hours they want to be accountable for when they enroll.
- If a student enrolls in .5 units, they have elected to participate for 27 hours across the semester.
- If a student enrolls in 1.0 unit, they have elected to participate for 54 hours across the semester.
Students have the ability to enroll in multiple ENGLB courses. Be advised that this will only increase the hours they are committing to, as in the case of 3 whole units which amounts to 162 hours in LRC 203 or logged on to Penji.
You can access Penji (CRC Online Tutoring) via the website or app.

Testimonial
“While I was in the M.A. program at CSULB, I failed in an writing exam and participated in discussions with peer tutors each week. It really helped me to develop my speaking and writing skills and organization of my thoughts through practice with that person. I can successfully pass and graduate from the program.”

Frequently Asked Questions
The RWC only accepts paper drop offs online—not in person. Please use the RWC Paper Drop-Off on Canvas.
Please allow 24 to 48 hours for faculty and staff to review and comment on your paper. Please include as much context as you can, including the prompt for the assignment and any specific questions or concerns you have for the assignment.
We encourage ESL students to drop in and ask if what they are working on is better suited to ESL Tutoring or if the RWC is able to help. While the Reading and Writing Center is open to any enrolled student, we specialize in working on structure, argumentation, research, and higher order concerns in writing. We do have some ESL specialists that we share with the ESL Lab/Department and the Tutoring Center (Learning Resource Center, LRC 216); however, we cannot guarantee their availability will suit the needs of every student. In general, if an ESL student is has homework from an English class (ENGWR, ENGL, etc), or if their ESL class has assigned them essay writing, we should be able to help. Either way, any student that comes to the RWC will be directed to whomever can best assist them.
Possibly. There are eight ENGLB classes (ENGLB 70, 72, 73, 75, 76, 77, 78, and 299). The College Admissions office allows students to take each ENGLB class for up to one unit. The number of times a student can take an ENGLB class, then, depends on how many units the student registers for and how many hours he/she completes. For example, if a student enrolls in ENGLB 70 for 1 unit and completes the required number of hours in the lab, at the end of the semester that student will receive 1 unit and will not be able to re-enroll in ENLGB 70. However, if a student enrolls in ENGLB 70 for .5 unit and completes the required number of hours in the lab, at the end of the semester that student will receive .5 unit in the lab and will be able to re-enroll in ENGLB 70 for another .5 unit if desired.
No. Enrollment in an ENGLB class is not automatic and is not related to enrollment in any other class.
The RWC is staffed by English professors, Instructional Assistants, and Peer Tutors throughout the day. Everyone has a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences and all are able to help students to develop their writing.
By checking the schedule, students can find out if and when their professors work in the RWC. This schedule changes every semester.
No appointments are necessary. As long as students are enrolled at the college, they are free to come to the lab any time during the hours of operation.
The CRC Library and the RWC Canvas have resources for research, citation, and some grammar/reading; however, the RWC primarily works as assistance to an assignment that is brought to a tutor. We do not have curriculum or stand alone assignments that are available to students. From time to time, we host workshops and have special guests to help with foundational writing skills. Drop by the RWC or log in to Penji and ask what is available at that time.
