Cosumnes River College is honored to have the designation as an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). AANAPISI is one of eight federally designated Minority-Serving Institutions (MSI) programs and was established by Congress in 2007 as part of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act. It was expanded in 2008 under the Higher Education Opportunity Act.

In fall 2021, Cosumnes River College was awarded an AANAPISI grant ($1.5 million over five years) from the US Department of Education for the APIDA HAWKS (Holistic Achievement With Knowledge and Service) Center. APIDA HAWKS implements a strategically focused, campus-wide effort to improve retention and graduation rates of underserved Asian American Pacific Islander American Desi American (APIDA) and other high-need students.

Mission

The APIDA HAWKS Program is proud to be a pioneer in creating a safe space for culturally-inclusive student support, with particular emphasis on academically and personally supporting students from low-income backgrounds.

What is APIDA HAWKS?

APIDA HAWKS believes in positively impacting both our local community and students. Our vision revolves around cultivating a resilient community where students feel a sense of belonging and support, allowing them to thrive in community college and advance towards their educational and career aspirations at four-year universities, vocational schools, and beyond. We provide culturally enriching academic, personal, and professional support that fosters a strong foundation for students to flourish and succeed in higher education and beyond. Students in the program receive personal mentorship, priority registration, field trips to college campuses, workshops on financial literacy and the college transfer process, and events honoring the diverse cultural heritage of students.
